CAO Technologies is the engineering side of Cao Investment Group. We build the software, automations and site infrastructure that small and mid-market operators need once spreadsheets, manual handoffs and off-the-shelf tools stop keeping up.

Most of the work starts the same way. A business is running fine on paper, but somebody is spending six hours a week re-typing the same data into three systems, a report that decides real money is assembled by hand, or a website is quietly costing traffic because nobody has looked under it in three years. Those are engineering problems, and they have engineering answers.

We work as an operating partner rather than a vendor: we scope the highest-leverage fix first, build it, and stay involved long enough to know whether it actually held up.

AI consulting and integration

AI is genuinely useful for a narrow set of jobs — triage, first-pass drafting, extraction, answering the same forty questions — and wasteful for most of the rest. A fair number of these conversations end with a form and no model at all.

Workflow automation

The highest-return work we do, because the tasks worth automating are the ones a business has stopped noticing. We automate what is deterministic and leave what needs judgement alone.

Custom web applications

Buy before you build. That is the honest default, and most of the time we will point you at existing software rather than quote you for a custom one.

Building makes sense in a narrower set of cases: when the off-the-shelf options price per seat or per unit in a way that punishes you for growing, when the thing you do differently from competitors is exactly the thing the software will not let you do, or when you are already paying for four tools to approximate one workflow.

We have taken that route ourselves. BarebonesPM exists because commercial property-management platforms are priced and shaped for portfolios much larger than the ones most independent landlords actually run. Building it is also why we are comfortable telling you not to build — we know what the ongoing cost of owning software looks like.

Technical SEO and site performance

Infrastructure, not content marketing. Whether search engines can crawl your site, whether your pages describe themselves, and whether the whole thing loads fast enough that people stay.

How a technology engagement works

  • Operating review. We look at how the work runs today — the systems, the handoffs, and the places where a person is acting as the integration layer between two pieces of software.
  • Scope the highest-leverage fix. One thing, chosen because it returns the most time or removes the most risk. Not a twelve-month roadmap.
  • Build it. Shipped and running in your environment, with the people who will use it trained on it.
  • Stay involved. Systems drift. We would rather find out that something broke than have you discover it in a quarter-end report.

Common questions

How small is too small?

Not very. The best automation candidates are often the smallest operations, because a five-person company feels a recovered ten hours a month immediately. What matters more than headcount is whether the process is repetitive and currently manual.

Do we have to move off the software we already use?

Usually not. Ripping out a working system is expensive and disruptive, and most of the value is in the gaps between systems rather than the systems themselves. We would rather connect what you have than replace it.

What happens if the thing you build breaks after you leave?

Fair question, and the reason we do not disappear at handover. You get the source, the credentials and the documentation as a matter of course — nothing we build is a hostage. Most clients keep us on a light retainer for exactly this reason.
